Technique discovery and color exploration drive my creative process through my work. I focus in on portraiture more than any other subject; the human features interest me and give me so much room to think creatively. I think how can I change up this very real thing and dramatize it to make it crazy, sad, or even funny? In my work I play with the percentages of realism and abstraction giving an almost eerie quality - some more than others. I’m interested in mark making and how it can play into a subject's realism or its potential to be abstract. I like the atmosphere it brings to my works and I love doing texture/color studies with any materials to try to discover new ways to apply different mediums. Layering with these levels of exposition and color-ways can turn into an endless process. I wonder often about whether a piece is truly finished or not. But I keep going until it feels just right; I turn to my intuition more often than not. I can’t think about my next choice too much or it loses the “me” quality. Those quick wit decisions keep me interested in the work and excites me to think of new ways to portray a subject.
